I am a recently retired Grandfather who has created an entire series of "Benji the Bear" stories in my head for the last 35 years, starting with my firstborn son, and now 4 children and 5 grandchildren later, I had time on my hands and decided to put these stories that have lived for so long at bedtime into a real book, complete with the illustrations that I have pictured mentally for so long.  Yet...I knew nothing on the how or even what to do!

After doing a bit of research, reviewing several options, I came across Kristen's wonderful free writing workshops and took all 5, which then lead me into enrolling in her "Publish that Picture Book" which was exactly what I needed.  I could take at my own pace, review episodes over and over and these courses literally held my hand throughout the entire process!  I had never heard of an ISBN for example or even realized that there was such a thing, and I certainly had never realized there was/is such a strict process in page count, what counts as a page, bleed, trim, binding, etc.  Her courses explained all so simply and in a way that made it all feel so less intimidating.

And then I got to the "layout" portion...phew, steep learning curve to me!  Not only did my illustrations take time to create, now I had to do all of this "formatting, color specs, margins, inside binding...all geared to the analog world of hard copy printing and cutting!  Her husband does a marvelous job in explaining, yet this part took me some time to master, yet I learned to just do a little at a time, research how to do...then do, and then go to next step, versus trying to learn publishing software all in one step!  (I chose and use Affinity by Canva, as I was too cheap to buy Adobe Publisher!).  All I can say is it works great for my needs!

To end with...I can't endorse her courses any stronger.  If someone like me can start with knowing nothing and then end with my 5-year old grandson in my lap reading my book to me is literally a priceless moment!  Here is my finished work, and I already have the next one in my head ready to go!  https://www.instagram.com/benjithebearstories/
